Orkney Islands Council convener Hugh Halcro-Johnston was today appointed to the board of Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Scottish secretary Michael Forsyth said: 'I am delighted that Hugh Halcro-Johnston has accepted my invitation to join the board of Highlands and Islands Enterprise. He brings with him a wide range of knowledge and experience from both the public and the private sector which will prove highly relevant to addressing some of the key issues facing the Highlands and Islands at present.

'Since 1991 Highlands and Islands Enterprise has played a vital role in diversifying and strengthening the Highland economy. I am confident that with the enthusiasm and dedication of its board members, Highlands and Islands Enterprise is well placed to ensure that economic progress in the area continues. Mr Halcro-Johnston will, I am sure, make an important contribution to this process.'
