The appointment of three new board members and the re-appointment of four of the current members to the Funding Agency for Schools were announced today by education and employment secretary Gillian Shephard.

They are: Cynthia Lake, David Newton and Arthur Pollard.

Shailendra Adwalpalkar, Lesley King, Arthur Hearnden and Francis Patterson, whose periods of appointment expired on 31 March 1996, have been re-appointed.

'After two years of operation, the agency has firmly established itself as a major player in the education world,' Mrs Shephard said.

'Cynthia Lake, Professor Newton and Professor Pollard will bring valuable new skills and experience to the board. They will complement and enhance an already excellent and experienced board.

'I would like to pay tribute to Peter Turner who left the board on 31st March for the very valuable contribution that he has made to the early life of the agency. I wish him well for the future.'
