The boundaries of the proposed new local authorities are to be adjusted in three areas, Scottish secretary, Ian Lang announced today.

RUTHERGLEN is to included in the new South Lanarkshire authority. In the city of DUNDEE the new proposals involve the retention of two areas, Camperdown Park and Clatto Country Park, to the north west of the city and West Pitkerro industrial estate to the east. New proposals would also mean PRESTONPANS will be included in the new Berwickshire and East Lothian Council.

Opening a debate on the Queen's Speech he said that the changes in local government reform legislation would affect the boundaries between South Lanarkshire and Glasgow, around the city of Dundee and the boundary between the Lothians and Berwickshire and East Lothian at Prestonpans.

Mr Lang said: 'In the first case we have concluded that the areas of Toryglen and Kings Park would more appropriately remain Glasgow and we will be redefining this boundary to follow much more closely the line of the old county boundaries in the area.

'In the case of Dundee we have acknowledged the importance of Camperdown Park to the city, recognising that it was purchased by trust monies bequeathed to the city and we are proposing to adjust the boundary to include within the city not only the park but also the adjacent recreational area of Clatto Country Park.

'To the east of the city we have accepted the reasoned arguments which have been presented for the retention of the West Pitkerro industrial estate within the city.

'In relation to Prestonpans, we have recognised the problems to which the White Paper boundaries would give rise and we are proposing to adjust the boundary to include Prestonpans in Berwickshire and West Lothian.

'I believe that these changes will make for more sensible and effective boundaries in these areas.'
