Bridgend CBC has selected Jo Farrar as its new chief executive officer.

Assistant chief executive with Cardiff Council since December 2004, Dr Farrar has previously worked on the change team overseeing the merger of ELWa, the Welsh Development Agency and the Wales Tourist Board with the Welsh Assembly Government. She has also worked for Camden LBC as an assistant chief executive, a director of corporate services at ELWa and deputy director for the reform strategy at the Cabinet Office.

Dr Farrar has held a number of positions with the Home Office including head of opportunities, training and development, head of the Home Office Health and Welfare Service, private secretary to the home secretary, head of strategy, performance and planning for the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and leader of the Vehicle Crime Bill and policy team.

A member of the Institute of Management, Dr Farrar is chair of the Senior Managers Forum SOLACE (Wales), a chartered psychologist and chair of Public Service Management Wales.

Dr Farrar said: 'I know Bridgend very well and believe that its mix of urban and rural areas make it a unique and interesting place with many opportunities and challenges. I believe that Bridgend County Borough Council is at a turning point where the need and ambition for change and willingness to work in partnership will be an example to Wales and beyond.'

Cheryl Green, leader of Bridgend CBC: 'We welcome Jo to the team and look forward to working with her. Her considerable experience, confidence and enthusiasm will be a huge benefit to Bridgend County Borough Council and the people we serve.'

Byron Davies, chief executive of Cardiff Council said: 'Jo has made a significant contribution to the work of the council during her time as assistant chief executive. Since her appointment in December 2004 she has been responsible for the strategic management of a number of key areas including legal services, human resources and scrutiny and has assisted greatly in driving forward the change and improvement agenda which has helped to strengthen the delivery of services to the people of Cardiff. It is pleasing for me personally and for Cardiff that we have been able to assist Jo in developing her skills and talents to a level that have secured this top appointment. We wish her every success for the future as the chief executive of Bridgend.'

Fifteen candidates applied for the post. Once ratified by council, Dr Farrar will take up her new position in January 2007.
