Orkney's social work director Dr Avril Osborne pledged to keep families together whenever possible in cases of suspected child abuse, reports the Scotsman (14 May, p5).

Dr Osborne outlined new policies, guidelines and procedures for child protection on the islands. In February 1991 nine children from four island families were taken into care during dawn raids amid claims that they were the victims of a paedophile ring.
