A delegation of officers and members from the new Redcar and Cleveland authority met environment minister Paul Beresford today to 'ask for a level playing field.'

The council faces a 13.6% rise in council tax levels and budget cuts of over £3m on provisional figures for grant allocations and capping levels.

'We have a good case given the importance of making the changeover to the new local government system in our area as effective as possible,' said chief executive Andrew Kilburn.

'There is a strong case for the capping limit being relaxed in order to prevent what would inevitably be painful reductions on services.'
