Teresa Rees was today appointed as a commissioner of the Equal Opportunities Commission for a two year term from 1 June, education and employment secretary Gillian Shephard announced today.

Professor Rees will have a special responsibility for Wales on the Commission.

Teresa Rees lives in Mid Glamorgan and is professor of Labour Market Studies at the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol. She has a long and distinguished record of research and consultancy in the field of women, work and employment.

From 1988-93 she was director of the Social Research Unit and Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Wales in Cardiff. Professor Rees is a member of the executive committee of the Institute of Welsh Affairs.

She is consultant to the European Commission on equal opportunities matters, and is the author of Women and the Labour Market (London Routledge).

-- Prof Rees replaces Noreen Bray, who left the commission on 31 December 1996.
