Manchester CC has hit out at new court charges set to come in on 15 January, which its says will hit poor debtors.

Before a court will deal with a proposed court order, it will ask the applicant to pay£10 into court first. Although those on income support will be able to claim back the cash, they will still have to pay it first.

Jim Murphy, director of Manchester CC's social services department, said: 'The last thing people on low incomes and in debt want is being taken to court and then asked to pay£10 just to explain to the court they can't afford to repay the debt.'END
