Manchester City Council has announced the appointment of a new director of social services - Heather Stephens - to head up the department and drive it forward to meet the challenges of modernisation and best value.

Ms Stephens is currently director of social services at Stockport MBC. She started work in the voluntary sector in 1981 before moving

to the public sector where she has worked for several different local

authorities in a range of positions since 1986. She has worked for West Glamorgan CC, South Glamorgan CC, Hereford and Worcestor

Council and Birmingham City Council. She joined Barnsley Council in 1994 as assistant director (resources) before moving to Sheffield City Council as deputy director of social services in 1997. Ms Stephens joined Stockport MBC as director of social services in March 1999.
