Edinburgh has already run into problems over the appointment of its new chief executive, William Blyth, the Scotsman reports.

The successor to Paul Lowenberg was appointed with a majority of only three votes at a meeting of full council.

Mr Blyth faces problems surrounding Richard Shields, the head of corporate services, who was dismissed them reinstated following a dispute involving Mr Lowenberg.

In court yesterday, Mr Blyth failed to block the appointment of the candidate who beat him for a post in the council's new strategic services division.
