A new network providing information on the European Union for schools and colleges in England and Wales will be launched tomorrow, Europe Day.

This innovative service has been developed in response to the hundreds of requests from the education sector (well over 50% of all letters and 30% of phone calls) for factual information received every week by the UK offices of the European Commission.

To meet this growing demand and as part of a long-term programme of decentralisation aimed at placing information about Europe as close as possible to the inquirer, 10 new regional European Resource Centres for schools and colleges have been established.

The move follows discussions between the European Commission, chief education officers, schools library services and networks serving the further education sector.

They identified the Central Bureau for Educational Visits and Exchanges as the national body best placed to coordinate the network.
