Ministers have drawn up new plans to increase funding for grant maintained schools in areas where councils are spending less than Government approved levels on education, the Times Educational Supplement reports (p1).

The paper says that the idea is outlined in the latest consultation paper on the Common Funding formula for secondary schools to be piloted in five authorities from April.

But it adds that plans for the pilots in the five authorities appear to be in disarray and that the Association of County Councils has called for the pilot schemes - in Bromley, Hillingdon, Calderdale, Essex and Gloucestershire - to be abandoned.
