A new guide to maternity rights has been published by the Employment Department in conjunction with the Department of Social Security.

Publication of the booklet fulfils a commitment which the government gave last year, during the passage through Parliament of the Trade Union Reform and Employment Rights Act, to issue plain English guidance material on the full statutory scheme of maternity rights.

'The Department's new guide brings all the relevant information together in one place and in a form that is easy to use', Employment Minister Ann Widdecombe said.

The new statutory maternity rights, which are now available to all pregnant employees whose babies are due on or after 16 October, include: a minimum entitlement to 14 weeks maternity leave, regardless of length of service or hours of work;

full protection against maternity-related dismissal; and

enhanced maternity pay entitlements.
