Tough new guidelines to stop Britain's school playing fields being swallowed up by developers will be issued today, reported the Sunday People (p12) Under the Conservative government, 5,000 schools in 10 years were stripped of their fields for housing and supermarkets.

Schools minister Charles Clarke has now ordered that local authorities have to get his permission before they can sell. And unless a school is actually closed, only sales to provide purpose-built sports centres will be approved. The cash will have to be ploughed back into school funds and local people must be fully consulted.
