Bury MBC deputy leader Derek Boden has accepted the position as leader of the North West Regional Assembly. Made up of 46 councils from across the North West who between them have responsibility for nearly seven million people, the assembly has three prominent roles. They are to oversee and scrutinise the work of the North West Development Agency, prepare regional planning guidelines and promote sustainable development to ensure the protection and enhancement of local community life and the environment.

Cllr Boden, who has been Bury's representative on the assembly in recent years said: 'The assembly covers a huge area which takes in the counties of Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. There is no doubt that the organisation has a real role to play in the region by ensuring that any policies or plans for the North West are well balanced and take into account the widely varying geographical and economical differences that can be found within it. I feel very honoured to have been asked to take up the role of leader and I am looking forward to working on behalf of not just my own borough but the entire North West. Having said that, my local constituents need not worry about me overlooking my obligations to them. I intend to maintain my regular surgeries as always and also continue with all my other council duties in Bury.'
