The Local Government International Bureau has appointed Camden LBC chief executive Jeremy Smith as its director. He replaces Paul Bongers, who is retiring.

Mr Smith qualified as a barrister in 1969, and joined local government in 1983. 'I've always had an interest in international affairs. After six tough years at Camden this was a good opportunity,' he said.

He wants to break down the language barrier between Brussels and local government: 'Perhaps less arcane language would help.'
