A new child protection management information system will be a valuable feature of the arrangements for the effective protection of children from harm, according to James Douglas-Hamilton, minister of state at the Scottish Office.

The first child protection bulletin contains information on child protection work undertaken by local authorities in Scotland during 1993-94.

Lord James said: 'Major resources are devoted to protecting Scotland's children from harm - and rightly so. But these resources have to be managed effectively, and this is where good management information is indispensable.

'The new bulletin provides that information for central government and local authorities. It is therefore a valuable feature of our arrangements for the effective protection for our children from harm.

'I hope that local authorities will use the output of this system in their management of child protection services - it should improve management and thereby improve services.'
