Localism, the philosophy coined by the New Local Government Network, has been attacked as a danger to progressive values.

In his pamphlet, In praise of centralism, journalist David Walker warns local discretion can mean 'unacceptable sacrifices of equal opportunity'.

The title is a direct attack on the NLGN's 'new localist' agenda. Localism has been criticised for the role it grants to the private sector and its promotion of market competition in public services.

The pamphlet adds: 'We must not forget the market is a dream mechanism for proponents of diversity. Left to its own devices, it spreads income and wealth differentially. Advocates of the new localism should beware becoming a fifth column for economic liberalism.'
