The Right Honourable The Lord Rodger of Earlsferry has been appointed Lord Justice General and President of the Court of Session in Scotland.

Lord Rodger, currently one of the Senators of the College of Justice in Scotland, replaces the Right Honourable The Lord Hope of Craighead who becomes a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary.

Lord Rodger, 51, was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1974 and was Clerk of Faculty between 1976 and 1979. He took Silk in 1985, was an Advocate Depute between 1985 and 1988 and was Solicitor General for Scotland from 1989 to 1992. He was Lord Advocate from April 1992 until becoming a Senator on 22 November 1995. Lord Rodger was a member of the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland (1981-84). He is a Fellow of the British Academy.
