The small print of a government policy paper published by John Prescott today has revealed that the government is moving ahead to cull the number of local councillors across the country and pay the remaining councillors 'fat cat' salaries.

The policy papercalls for a review of the number of councillors and their remuneration, following on from leaked government papers in May that advocated higher salaries for councillors and a reduction in numbers.

Shadow local government secretary Eric Pickles said:

'At a time of soaring council taxes hitting pensioners and hard-working families, local residents will justifiably resent John Prescott's plans to hike the pay of councillors and establish a tier of fat cat, full-time bureaucrats.

'Reducing the number of local, voluntary councillors will merely reduce the service that taxpayers receive and make council officials more distant from their communities.'
