A waste disposal brokerage plans a new recycling scheme for businesses, reports the Financial Times (p10).

Wastelink managing director Barry Van Danzig is to apply to the Office of Fair Trading to register the Wastepack scheme, which he said would provide a lower cost service than the existing Valpak.

Under a European Union directive, industry is required to recycle or recover up to half its packaging waste by 2001, and companies must either do it themselves or pay for schemes.

Wastepack would only charge an annual subscription fee to cover its costs. However, consultancy ERM has said it would be unlikely to work.
