Nine directors of public health for the English regions were announced today by chief medical officer Liam Donaldson. This follows the announcement of the reorganised structure of the NHS with fewer strategic health authorities taking a more streamlined approach to management of the health service.

The new Director of Public Health posts will simplify the current regional public health functions by replacing the roles of Regional Director of Public Health, Strategic Health Authority (SHA) Director of Public Health and Medical Director.

The Directors of Public Health will be accountable for all their Strategic Health Authority responsibilities to their relevant SHA Chief Executive and will be a board members of their SHA.

The Directors' annual accountability review will be carried out by the Chief Executive of the Strategic Health Authority with input from the Government Office Regional Director and the Department of Health.

The Directors' professional appraisal, in line with the requirement for revalidation and accreditation, will be carried out under direction of the Chief Medical Officer.

The Directors of Public Health and their teams will work as part of the Government Office business planning processes under the direction of the Regional Director of the Government Office in line with the requirements of the central government departments concerned.

Sir Liam said:

'I am delighted to announce the appointment of the new Directors of Public Health. They will have a key role in leadership for public health at a regional level and will build on the work being carried out as part of the Choosing Health White Paper.

'The new Directors of Public Health will take forward work on the public health function such as improving the health of the population in their area, reducing health inequalities, emergency planning, health protection, clinical quality and patient safety. They will be an asset to Strategic Health Authority and Government Office Boards.'

East of England Paul Cosford

North East Stephen Singleton

North West Ruth Hussey

South Central SHA * Simon Tanner

South East SHA * Yvonne Doyle

[* These two posts will work as part of the Government Office of the South East.]
