The tests, which now take only two hours instead of four, were changed in response to Sir Ron Dearing's, head of the Curriculum review, recommendations and concentrate on basics such as maths, spelling and reading aloud.

Doug McAvoy, general secretary of the NUT said that shortening tests did not automatically improve their educational soundness.
