The new School Curriculum and Assessment Authority comes into being today, 1 October 1993. It brings together the work previously done by the National Curriculum Council and the School Examinations and Assessment Council.

SIr Ron Dearing said: 'Our style will be to involve teachers in consultation in our policy-making. I am now writing to hundreds of schools to invite them to take part in consultation conferences in regional centres about the major policy issues on which I have to advise the Secretary of State by the end of the year.
