Peter Thurnham (Con, Bolton North East) asked if the number of parents exercising their right to withdraw children from sex education classes and religious education were monitored by the education department. (WA, col 390).

Replying education minister, Eric Forth, noted that this duty was part of OFSTED's responsibilities for school inspections. New arrangements for sex education introduced under section 241 of the Education Act 1993, including the parental right to withdraw children from sex education, will come into effect from the autumn term 1994, he reported.

The government will issue guidance to schools next spring about new arrangements, in the light of responses to the consultative draft to be issued 'shortly' to local authority associations and LEAs.
