A radical shift in the way the local authority associations handle the Local Government Management Board will be considered by their joint personnel forum next week.

Members will consider a paper which argues the associations should take a more hands-on approach to how they commission work from the board.

It will recommend the associations give the LGMB a commissioning statement each year. 'We want far more of a debate within the local authority associations about what they want to see the board doing,' said Rob Pinkham, assistant secretary of the Association of District Councils.

'We need to do our job more professionally and effectively than we have until now.'
