International advances and the long-term future of the public services and the accountancy profession are at the heart of an ambitious new development strategy, published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.

CIPFA's development strategy 2006-2010 builds on the institute's numerous successes over recent years, and recognises the fundamental importance of its relationship with members and students. CIPFA is frequently recognised as the world-leading institute on public finance and accountancy. The new strategy builds on this to give a much stronger focus on international activities over the next five years.

The strategy can be downloaded from the website. Hard copies have also been despatched to the CIPFA members.

The strategy summarises an ambitious programme of projects and initiatives within a balanced performance scorecard which highlights four overarching

themes:

- Educating, training and continuously developing outstanding members

- Setting high standards and delivering best practice in the public interest

- Meeting customer needs and expectations

- Developing people and making best use of resources

The institute's focus and direction has also been encapsulated in a new statement of strategic purpose: 'Working in the public interest to promote high standards and deliver excellence in governance and financial management throughout the public services.'

Unveiling the new strategy, CIPFA president Diane Colley said:

'Under our new development strategy, CIPFA will engage as effectively as possible with members and students; invest even more energy and resources into their development; and capture and share more of their knowledge and expertise.

Members and students and our strong relationship with their employers are at the heart of CIPFA's success.

'The strategy recognises the profound challenges which are facing both the accountancy profession and the public services - CIPFA's two key domains. Far from hiding our heads in the sand we want to be ahead of the game, to set a positive agenda and to ensure that we are well positioned in the brave new world. If we can achieve as much in the next five years as we have in the past five, our prospects are very bright indeed.'
