The department of transport is to join with the English Historic Towns Forum in studies to establish the most appropriate traffic measures for areas with special historic character.

The EHTF is encouraging all its 49 local authority members to put forward proposals for experimental pilot schemes in traffic and conservation management.

Steven Norris, minister for local transport, said: 'I welcome the opportunity for the department to co-operate with local authorities on traffic management measures which are sympathetic to the many historic areas of our towns and cities.'

EHTF will be assisted in the studies by the department of transport, the DoE, the department of national heritage, English Heritage, the Civic Trust and the local authority associations.
