Improvements in a council's phone system has seen the volume of calls leap by a third, says the Yorkshire Post (p8).

Harrogate BC saw calls go up from 500,000 to 750,000 a year after it installed a new system with a main switchboard number plus direct dialling to individuals.

With 70 per cent of the council's contact with the public via telephone, 60 per cent of that is now via direct dialling.

Council leader Michael Johnson said: 'By using new technology we are handling more calls and giving the public better service with the same number of staff.'
