A new taskforce to strengthen Government and local action to fight drug misuse was announced today by Home Secretary Michael Howard. The Central Drugs Co-ordination Unit will review the Government's drugs strategy and aim to stimulate effective inter-agency action.

Commenting on today's Parliamentary announcement Mr Howard said: 'The Unit will spearhead action against drug misuse and foster partnership between local agencies who are already doing such excellent work to tackle drugs problems on the ground.

'The Government spends over £500 million each year on fighting the war against drugs - enforcing the law, treating drug addicts and funding 20 local teams as part of the Home Office Drugs Prevention Initiative.
