The European and International Unit was launched today to replace the Local Government International Bureau.
The new division, which is part of the Local Government Association, will lobby the European Union and institutions on behalf of councils.
The LGA said it would develop international partnerships and support locally elected members in European and international institutions. It will also promote the development of local democracy around the world.
A spokesman for the LGA said:
'The integration will strengthen lobbying work, bring international issues closer to local government and help the LGA to operate more effectively in Westminster, Brussels and worldwide.'
