Keeping track of efficiency savings is not always easy - but new software being introduced by South Gloucestershire Council is set to make the process far simpler.

The council's revenues and benefits division, together with partners Barony Consulting, is launching a new software package called BenefitMark.

It is designed to help authorities produce a clear audit trail for efficiency savings - and promote good practice.

BenefitMark records the volume of business carried out by a department - such as the number of benefits claims processed. Then, using budgetary information supplied by the department, it calculates efficiency savings.

It provides suggestions for best practice to show the council where it is doing well and where there is room for improvement.

And it also allows for benchmarking with other authorities who feed their data into the system.

Mike Hayesman, South Gloucestershire's head of revenues and benefits, said: 'All the information produced can be fed into the council's annual efficiency statement, giving us a real picture of where efficiencies have been made.

'It can also be used to clarify business decisions, measure the impact of rule changes, assist in measuring business cases and evaluate commercial bids for the service.

'This package represents real innovation. It is a far more consistent method than many currently used.'

South Gloucestershire has now been invited to work with Barony Consulting on developing a similar system for use in revenues sections - RevenueMark.
