New Year's honours list unveiled

  • Comment

Council leaders, chief executives, councillors and staff from around the UK have been included in the 2007 New Year's honours list for their work in local government.

Westminister City Council's deputy chief executive John Barradell has been nominated for an OBE for his work with the Metropolitan Police's special constabulary.

The accolade recognises his 27 years' work with the Met, where he oversaw a boost in the recruitment of ethnic minority specials. Mr Barradell said: "I'm deeply honoured to have been awarded in this way, but also very surprised. There are a lot of people who work incredibly hard for their local communities, and I'm proud to be honoured among them."

Also included in the list is retired Westminster street sweeper Edward Wilson - known as Ted. He has been nominated for an MBE. Mr Wilson has swept Trafalgar Square and the West End for 33 years.
