Newcastle City Council has proposed that the North's hospitals come under the control of an elected regional assembly, reports The Chronicle (p2).

Campaign for a Northern Assembly vice chair Don Price, commenting on a report discussed at last night's council meeting, said:

'The document goes further than the North of England Assembly and shadow home secretary Jack Straw's proposals.

'On health services, the elected regional assembly will be given powers in relation to the region's framework for health services and health commissioning. Details are still to be worked out.'
