Newcastle city council is to close one of the country's worst-performing comprehensive schools on the grounds that it is incapable of self-improvement, reports the Daily Telegraph (p5).

The council said that it could no longer tolerate the poor academic and attendance standards at Blakelaw School and was not prepared to give it more resources.

Newcastle city council education chairman Darren Murphy told the paper: 'We have to take a view as to whether the school has the ability to improve itself. We do not feel Blakelaw does and so it has to close.'
