The Daily Telegraph (Dec 12, p12) reported that more than 1,000 children who attended a Newcastle City Council-run nursery where two employees were accused of systematic sexual abuse may be interviewed about their experiences.

The council is considering opening an inquiry to re-examine the cases of 1,162 children after an official report claimed that Christopher Lillie and Dawn Reed introduced children to a paedophile ring when they should have been looking after them at the nursery.

The council said it had taken action on 39 recommendations made by the

independent investigators into the case and was to update its policy on 17 others. Compensation claims by the families of 60 children identified as victims of abuse may be settled out of court.
