Newcastle City Council has been attacked by countryside campaigners who say council plans to release large amounts of Green Belt land for development will undermine urban regeneration efforts, the Northern Echo reports (27 September, p6).

The Council for the Protection of Rural England is now calling on the government to reject the council's proposals in its unitary development plan.

It says council proposals would result in the release of over 400 acres of land protected from development but Councillor Don Price said greenfield sites would only be released for housing when derelict inner-city areas were substantially used up and he insisted the authority would concentrate on regenerating derelict sites.
