The authority will provide loans of up to£400 and mileage allowances to encourage staff to use bikes rather than their cars. The incentives will initially be offered to highways department staff on a six-month pilot basis.

The city council are also trying to encourage other schemes to promote the use of bikes, such as creating new cycle routes, providing cycle parking places and taking cyclists into consideration in road planning.
