Newcastle City Council's development director Roy Ashton has handed in his resignation following a decision by the Labour group to break up his department, reported the Evening Chronicle (7 Nov p3).

Mr Ashton, 53, is expected to leave in the new year after a redundancy package is worked out.

Liberal Democrat leader John Shipley blamed Labour for the resignation: 'I am bitterly disappointed by Roy Ashton's decision. The Labour group is sending out all the wrong messages to those thinking of investing in the city.'

But council leader Tony Flynn said: 'There are going to be changes and Roy felt it was the best time to go. He has been a valuable and loyal servant to the authority.'
