The resignation of John O'Shea, Labour leader of Newcastle City Council, has fuelled Labour party fears that the behaviour of some powerful councillors could become a general election issue, the Observer reported (Feb 16, p8).

Mr O'Shea resigned on Thursday after an anonymous letter to the district auditor accused him of submitting false claims for lost earnings while serving as a magistrate. Mr O'Shea denies the charge.

Doncaster and Glasgow councillors have also attracted attention because of expenses claims and foreign trips.
