Newcastle City Council chief whip Kevan Jones is recommending the suspension of a councillor from the Labour group for his opposition to the authority's attitude towards the football club's development plans, reports the Evening Chronicle (p5)

Iain Kirkham could be suspended from the group for three months for voting against moves to fast-track a new super stadium project for Newcastle United.

The council has set up a sub-group to handle details of the scheme and take reports on negotiations with the club. Councillors will be represented but will not have a vote. Cllr Kirkham fears residents will be excluded from an important part of the decision making process, the Chronicle reports.

Meanwhile, the council has still not received a planning application from the club.
