Hard on the heels of the north east's campaign to have the Lindisfarne Gospels returned to Durham cathedral from the British Library, Newcastle city council wants George Stephenson's locomotive, the Rocket, returned from the Science Museum in London.

City council deputy leader Don Price told BBC Radio Four's Today programme: 'The Rocket is part of the national collection and if we are part of the nation then people in this region are entitled to have access to the national collections and at the moment they don't have.

'I certainly think the Rocket should be repatriated and I think a lot of the national collections should be devolved out to the regions so that people have true access to their national collections.'
