Newcastle's education budget will be boosted by £280,000 after civil servants miscalculated the amount of money the council should receive for pupils from other areas educated in city schools, The Chronicle reports (p1).

The extra money will limit the cuts in schools to about £1.2m - but the council still faces overall budget reductions of £5m which will hit education, social services, recreation an development.

The news came after an all-party delegation yesterday met local government minister David Curry, reports the paper.
