More than half the 54 winners in the latest round of the beacon council scheme have received the award for the first time.

The successful councils will share £5m of government funding to help spread best practice in a broad range of services, including education standards, access to information and tackling homelessness.

Local government minister Nick Raynsford said: 'The beacons selected are great examples of how good services can make a difference to people's lives.

'But just as importantly the new beacons will help other councils learn from their experience.'
