Newham LBC has been criticised by the local government ombudsman over its handling of housing renovation grants.

An investigation following dozens of complaints to the ombudsman has found maladministration of the queuing system for owner occupiers living in unsatisfactory housing.

Residents complained that the council had kept them waiting in an overly long and unfair queuing system for surveys and advice on the works needed to bring a property up to grant standard.

But ombudsman Edward Osmotherly said some delay resulted from a mismatch in the demand and supply of the grants, which was the fault government underfunding.

Mr Osmotherly said: 'Even without maladministration there would have been long waits. The overwhelming reason for delay was beyond the council's control.'
