Newham LBC leader and Association of London Government chairman Robin Wales has been knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Sir Robin, who led Newham to victory as Council of the Year in the LGC Awards for Excellence 2000. He said: 'This is an honour that recognises the contribution made by everybody in Newham council and in the wider Newham community.'

He was elected to the ALG post at its annual meeting last week.

Warwickshire CC chief executive Ian Caulfield has received the CBE, as have Wigan MBC education director Robert Clark, South Lanarkshire Council social work executive director Professor Alexander Cameron and Dundee City Council deputy leader Mervyn Rolfe.

Sir Robin's knighthood means either the chief executive or leader has been honoured for three out of the four winners of the Council of the Year Award.
