The Land Authority for Wales is to seek land purchase orders through the Welsh Office, in its attempt to set up a bird reserve on the Gwent Levels, reports The Western Mail (p2).

The bird reserve is being sought by LAW as compensation for birds who will lose saltmarshes and mudflats following the building of the Cardiff Barrage.

Newport CBC has so far been unable to make a decision on the overall scheme, but it will be the proposed compulsory purchase of some farmers' land which will be the biggest factor at the likely public inquiry into the scheme.
