An exercise comparing Newport CBC's payroll with housing benefit claims has thrown up 90 cases of fraud worth£151,000.

A report last week said£130,400 had not yet been recovered. It recommended a review of recovery systems.

Since the data-matching exercise started last June, Newport has found 595 council tax or housing benefit claims warranting further investigation.

Seventeen employees have been dismissed and another six issued with a warning. In addition, 35 resigned either before or at a disciplinary hearing, and 17 before their department was notified.
