Newport CBC is seeking private funding for its£55m Newport Southern Distributer Road project in the only local authority private finance initiative road deal currently being worked on in England and Wales, reports Construction News (p7).

All other projects have been put on hold until the government publishes its transport white paper in June, but the Newport scheme is going ahead because it is one of six construction projects awarded pathfinder status by the Welsh Office, which has given the authority a£75,000 grant to carry out preliminary work.

The council had considered funding the project by the traditional supplementary grant route, but has now ruled this out because 'there were some indicationd that the Welsh Office might not make funds available for this approach,' according to Brian Kemp, of the highways department.

Now the council is to seek legal and technical expertise before advertising for contractors. The aim is then to appoint a preferred bidder by autumn 1999 and start on site the following spring.
