Hilary Armstrong, the local government minister, yesterday praised Kingston Upon Hull City Council for its efforts to boost turnout in next month's local election, reports The Yorkshire Post (p9).

The council is one of many around the country which has come up with suggestions on how to make voting easier for poeple. Under the plans, Hull residents will have a choice of three days on which to cast their vote instead of the traditional one.

Ms Armstrong said: 'I admire any scheme that encourages more people to take an interest in the future of their own communities.'
